Public Safety Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin faces the challenge of finding appropriate detention for Ziggy Beazer, a murder accused diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2020, due to overcrowding in psychiatric facilities and the inadequacy of His Majesty’s Prison for mentally ill individuals.

Beazer is accused of murdering Leroy Caesar in their shared cell at St John’s Police Station on December 29, 2021. Recent High Court proceedings revealed his ongoing psychological instability.

The court has instructed Benjamin to secure a suitable facility for Beazer’s psychiatric care. Justice Ann Marie Smith has mandated regular medical reports on Beazer’s fitness to stand trial, with the first report due by October 11.
