Antigua Prepares Over 1,000 Additional Rooms for SIDS4 Guests-

In a bid to accommodate the influx of guests for the SIDS4 conference, Antigua’s tourism authorities have identified over a thousand additional rooms.
These rooms will cater to attendees who are unable to secure accommodation in the nation’s hotels.
The Tourism Ministry took steps by convening a meeting with owners and operators of Airbnb properties and similar accommodations on Wednesday.
The objective was to discuss and finalize arrangements to ensure the smooth hosting of the SIDS4 conference participants.
Ambassador Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, provided an update on the accommodation preparations.
Hurst mentioned, “We don’t yet have a precise number, but we know that we have exceeded 1,000 rooms, separate and apart from those delegates or delegations that have made their individual arrangements with hotels in Antigua.”
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are in the crossfires of multiple crises: climate change, the economic and social repercussions of COVID-19, and a crisis of debt.
The pandemic hugely impacted all island nations, especially those dependent on tourism. Global lockdowns left large holes in islands’ coffers and severely set back efforts to invest in the Sustainable Development Goals.
Meanwhile, climate action is becoming increasingly urgent, as weather-related disasters have doubled in two decades: with island nations both most vulnerable and least responsible.
At this time of great peril, opportunity must be seized.
In Antigua and Barbuda in May 2024, the international community will gather to review SIDS’ sustainable development progress and propose a new decade of partnerships and solutions to supercharge their path to resilient prosperity.
