UPDATED: APUA PROBES ISLANDWIDE BLACKOUT

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority says its teams are currently carrying out assessments in the wake of an islandwide power outage.

The Electricity Business Unit says the outage happened shortly before 10pm on Monday. It is unclear at this point what triggered the system failure.

More details are expected as the assessments continue.

EARLIER REPORT:

Several communities across Antigua were plunged into darkness Monday night as the Antigua Public Utilities Authority reported an unplanned outage affecting its electricity system.

Residents in Cedar Valley, All Saints, McKinnons, Buckleys, Hodges Bay, Clarkshill, Gambles, Jennings, Carlisle and other areas reported losing electricity shortly before 10 p.m.

Some residents described the outage as island-wide, although APUA did not immediately confirm the full extent of the disruption.

“The APUA Electricity Business Unit is currently experiencing an unplanned system outage,” the utility company said in a notice issued Sunday night.

APUA said technicians were assessing the problem and promised to provide an update as soon as possible.

The cause of the outage was not immediately disclosed.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience,” APUA said.
