VIDEO: Prime Minister Says Hostile Global Climate Makes Governing Antigua and Barbuda More Difficult

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history to govern, citing an increasingly hostile geopolitical environment that has made it more difficult for small island states to protect their interests.
Speaking on the Brown and Brown Show on Sunday, Browne said his administration continues to work toward its vision of making Antigua and Barbuda a “lifestyle superpower,” despite mounting international challenges.
“We just have to continue to work hard to stay the course. Challenges will come. There have been numerous challenges. In fact, this is one of the most difficult periods to govern,” Browne said.
He said the current global environment presents significant obstacles for small, vulnerable nations.
“When you look at the geopolitical environment in which we are operating today, it is hostile,” Browne said. “I want to repeat, hostile. And it is extremely difficult for small, vulnerable countries like Antigua and Barbuda to navigate this space.”
Despite those challenges, Browne said his government remains committed to maintaining respectful relationships with international partners while defending the country’s interests.
“However, we always remain very respectful of our international partners… We’re still making the case to ensure that they do not destroy our country. I want to make sure that Antigua and Barbuda remains safe,” he said.
The prime minister said his administration remains focused on improving living standards by promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening education and healthcare, protecting the environment and creating opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans to own a greater share of the country’s economy.
Browne also pointed to the country’s relatively low homicide rate compared with some regional neighbours, saying Antigua and Barbuda has remained a comparatively safe destination for residents and visitors alike. He urged citizens to resolve conflicts peacefully and said police were stepping up efforts to combat petty crimes, including a recent increase in chain-snatching incidents involving young offenders.
