Canadian wildfire smoke expected to pass over Caribbean; Antigua air quality remains good

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service (ABMS) says smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires is expected to reach the northeastern Caribbean but is not anticipated to significantly affect air quality in Antigua and Barbuda.

In an air quality update issued Tuesday, the Meteorological Service said forecast models indicate the smoke plume may already be present at higher levels of the atmosphere and is expected to move westward across the northern Caribbean and the Bahamas by Wednesday.

Despite the smoke, ABMS said air quality across Antigua and Barbuda remains in the “Good” category and is forecast to stay that way as the plume passes through the region.

The service added that the next notable air quality concern for the country is an anticipated surge of Saharan dust expected on Thursday.

The Meteorological Service said it will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as necessary.
