Antigua and Barbuda has officially opened a new plant tissue culture laboratory aimed at strengthening agricultural research, training and food security through a partnership with the People’s Republic of China.

Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith Jr. announced the opening on Tuesday, describing the facility as a major milestone for the country’s agricultural sector.

Smith said the laboratory was established through cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and China under the Phase II Agricultural Technical Assistance Project.

He said the facility will expand the country’s research and training capabilities while supporting efforts to improve food sovereignty and food security.

“This critical facility empowers us to strengthen our food sovereignty and security,” the minister said.

Smith also thanked the Government of China and the Ministry of Agriculture’s staff for helping to bring the project to completion.

He said the laboratory represents another step toward building a more sustainable agricultural sector and called for continued collaboration to advance food security and national prosperity.

The opening ceremony included government officials, representatives of the Chinese technical mission and a ribbon-cutting to mark the commissioning of the facility.
