The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its strike group entered the southern Caribbean this week in a major show of U.S. military presence as the Trump administration intensified pressure on Cuba following criminal charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro. (New York Post)

U.S. Southern Command said the deployment is intended as a demonstration of force rather than preparation for direct military action. The carrier had been conducting exercises with Brazil’s navy before moving into Caribbean waters. (New York Post)

The move came the same day the U.S. Justice Department unsealed charges against Castro linked to the 1996 shootdown of two civilian aircraft operated by the anti-Castro group Brothers to the Rescue. (The Guardian)

The strike group includes the USS Nimitz, fighter aircraft, destroyers and support vessels, adding to growing U.S. military and surveillance activity around Cuba amid worsening tensions between Washington and Havana. (Army Recognition)
