Second Group of Apprentices Begins Maritime Training Programme

A second group of young Antiguans and Barbudans has begun hands-on training through the Maritime Apprenticeship Programme, an initiative aimed at preparing the next generation of professionals for careers in the maritime industry.

The programme, a partnership between Tropical Shipping, the Port Management Association of the Caribbean (PMAC), and the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, provides practical workplace experience for participants interested in maritime careers.

Launched in 2025 to strengthen the link between education and industry, the initiative offers apprentices direct exposure to shipping, port operations, logistics, and the wider maritime sector. Following a successful inaugural year, the programme has returned in 2026 with a new cohort of aspiring maritime professionals.

The three apprentices selected through a competitive application process are Dezante Maile, Myah Ward, and Shekinah Hector.

Over the next six weeks, the apprentices will take part in a structured training programme combining workplace experience with mentorship from industry professionals. They will rotate through customer service, sales, accounting, documentation, vessel operations, and logistics at Tropical Shipping, while also gaining experience at the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority and with other industry partners.

The programme is intended to provide participants with a broad understanding of how the maritime supply chain supports trade and economic activity across the Caribbean.

Organisers said this year’s programme builds on the success of the inaugural cohort by offering expanded learning opportunities designed to help participants develop practical skills, broaden their knowledge of the industry, and explore long-term career paths in the maritime sector.

The initiative also reflects Tropical Shipping’s continued commitment to workforce development across the Caribbean and supports the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority’s efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime sector by investing in its future workforce.
