Pringle Pledges Nationwide Town Halls on Major National Issues

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle says the United Progressive Party will expand its public engagement efforts by holding town hall meetings across Antigua and Barbuda, arguing that citizens should play a direct role in shaping national policy.
Speaking during the party’s town hall on the government’s proposed third-country deportee arrangement, Pringle described the event as the first in a series of public consultations aimed at giving residents an opportunity to voice their views on issues affecting the country.
“As a Member of Parliament, as a representative of the people, it is important for me to speak on your behalf,” Pringle said. “But I don’t believe I can speak on your behalf not hearing from you.”
He said public participation is essential to the country’s development and should not be limited to elections or parliamentary debates.
“Interactions are critical for the forward movement of Antigua and Barbuda,” Pringle said.
The opposition leader announced that the UPP intends to take similar forums throughout the country to discuss not only the deportee proposal but other matters of national importance.
“This is the first of many more to come,” he said. “We are going to move through the length and breadth of Antigua and Barbuda, not only on this topic. Critical issues that affect the lives of our people must be discussed, not in closed-door meetings, but in town hall meetings where we can have you being part of the discussion.”
Pringle said the initiative is intended to ensure that public opinion informs the positions taken by the opposition on major national issues.
He urged citizens to become more involved in public affairs regardless of their political affiliation.
“I’m not asking you to be UPP. I’m not asking you to support me,” Pringle said. “What I’m asking is for all of us to support Antigua and Barbuda.”
