Malaka Parker to Be Sworn In Monday After Missing Initial Investiture Ceremony

Opposition Senator-designate Malaka Parker is expected to receive her instruments of appointment at Government House at 10 a.m. Monday after missing last week’s investiture ceremony because of what she described as “extenuating circumstances” requiring travel.
Parker’s investiture will complete the appointment process for the opposition’s Senate bench, following the swearing-in of three United Progressive Party senators last week.
Ashworth Azille, Jonathan Wehner and Chester Hughes were formally sworn in during that ceremony, which also marked the official appointment of Jamale Pringle as Leader of the Opposition.

At the ceremony, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams said the Senate has an important role in Antigua and Barbuda’s legislative framework, including reviewing legislation, contributing expertise and ensuring laws are examined in the national interest.
Sir Rodney said the Senate is strongest when it reflects “thoughtful debate, mutual respect, intellectual rigour and the sincere commitment to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.”
He also urged senators, regardless of political affiliation, to approach their responsibilities with “maturity, wisdom, integrity and respect for our democratic institutions,” saying citizens expect meaningful debate, responsible representation and legislation that advances justice, fairness, opportunity and national development.
Parker later announced on social media that she would be accommodated at a later date once arrangements were made.
In a statement issued Sunday, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle and Barbuda MP Trevor Walker said they regretted being unable to attend Parker’s investiture ceremony because they are currently overseas attending to personal matters.
The statement said both men conveyed congratulations and best wishes to Parker for a “productive and successful tenure” on the Senate’s opposition bench.
