LETTER: Sick Leave Does Not Mean a Lack of Integrity

Dear Editor,
There seems to be a growing lack of empathy in many professional environments regarding employees on sick leave. Too often, people are quick to judge without knowing the circumstances surrounding another person’s health or recovery.
Being on sick leave does not automatically mean that a person must remain bedridden or confined to their home every hour of the day. Recovery looks different for everyone. Some illnesses and medical procedures require rest while still allowing a person to take short walks, purchase groceries, attend medical appointments, or simply spend time outdoors as part of the healing process. Not every illness is visible, and not every recovery follows the same path.
Yes, there are individuals who abuse the system by claiming to be ill while engaging in activities that clearly contradict the purpose of sick leave. However, it is unfair to place every employee in that same category because of the actions of some. These assumptions only create mistrust and foster a toxic workplace culture.
There was a time when colleagues would do a quick check in on one another or send their regards through someone, where have those days gone? That small act of kindness reminded people that they were valued beyond the work they produced. Today, empathy often appears to be selective. It is sometimes extended only to those who are well-liked, while others are ignored or judged without compassion. Unfortunately, if some people do not like an individual personally, they seem to show little concern for your well-being.
Respect, and empathy should be shown equally to every employee, regardless of personal relationships or workplace politics. We never truly know what someone is facing physically, mentally, or emotionally.
We as a society, should strive to build workplaces where people feel supported during difficult times rather than scrutinized. A culture of empathy not only benefits employees but also strengthens organizations by fostering respect for one another.
