Fort James Renaissance Park to Break Ground by September, Browne Says

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Construction on the Fort James Renaissance Park is expected to begin by September as the government moves forward with plans to transform the historic area into a major tourism and recreational destination, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne radio programme, Browne said the government has earmarked $5 million from the settlement of a tax dispute with Sandals Resorts to launch the project.

“We have allocated $5 million from the Sandals settlement to begin the Fort James Renaissance project,” Browne said, adding that contracts are expected to be awarded in the coming months as preparations advance.

The Prime Minister described the development as a transformational project that will preserve public access to the area while creating new opportunities for economic activity, recreation and tourism.

Plans for the site include beach enhancement works, restaurants, recreational facilities and improvements to the surrounding environment. Browne said the redevelopment is intended to create a destination that both residents and visitors can enjoy.

He also outlined plans for Barnacle Point and an artificial reef project that is expected to become an environmental and educational attraction. According to Browne, reef modules have already been shipped from the United States and officials hope to have the attraction in place before Antigua and Barbuda hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next year.

“We want to create a space that people can enjoy while preserving the history and natural beauty of Fort James,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister noted that the project forms part of a wider effort to diversify the country’s tourism product beyond traditional beach tourism and increase visitor spending by developing new attractions.

Fort James, one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most recognizable historic landmarks, has long been identified as an area with significant tourism potential because of its beachfront location and historical importance.

Browne said the government is continuing discussions on complementary investments in the area, including tourism-related developments that could further enhance the western coastline while maintaining public access to the beach.

Officials expect the project to generate jobs during both the construction and operational phases while creating a new recreational hub for residents and visitors alike.
