Government to Rebuild Keeling Point Pier

A new concrete pier is set to replace the aging structure at Keeling Point as the government moves forward with plans to upgrade one of Antigua and Barbuda’s key fisheries landing sites.
The announcement followed a visit to the facility by Minister of State Randy Baltimore and St. John’s Rural West MP Michael Joseph, who met with Fisheries Division Coordinator Conrad Simon and members of the fishing community.
Officials said repairs carried out in previous years are no longer sufficient, and a full reconstruction has been deemed the best long-term solution. Plans include replacing the wooden support piles with concrete piles and constructing a reinforced concrete deck designed to withstand harsh marine conditions.

The new pier will feature a T-shaped design, replacing the existing L-shaped structure and providing additional space and improved access for fishermen.
The visit also addressed safety concerns following a recent shark attack involving a local fisherman. Baltimore said the fisherman is recovering and urged marine users to remain vigilant as officials continue to monitor reports of increased shark activity.
Simon welcomed the planned redevelopment, which forms part of broader efforts to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and improve conditions for those working in the sector.
