Students from the University of Toronto are spending three weeks in Antigua as part of the university’s Summer Abroad Program, which is being hosted in the Caribbean for the first time through a partnership with The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.

Lecturer Harold Lovell said he helped connect the University of Toronto’s Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies with UWI Five Islands, making the collaboration possible.

The course, titled Rethinking Crime, Law and Power in the Caribbean, provides students with an immersive look at the region’s legal, social and cultural landscape through lectures, panel discussions and educational field visits.

As part of the program, students are visiting Parliament, the High Court, His Majesty’s Prison, the Dennis Bowers Rehabilitation Centre, Betty’s Hope, Barbuda, Ras Freeman and the Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra.

Lovell said he also delivered a series of three lectures to the students, describing the experience as an honour and expressing optimism that the Caribbean-based program will have a lasting impact.
