Health Officials Intensify Fogging and Mosquito Surveillance After Imported Malaria Cases

Health officials in Antigua and Barbuda have intensified fogging and mosquito surveillance operations following the confirmation of two imported malaria cases, including one death, Health Minister Michael Joseph said Thursday.
Joseph said the Central Board of Health launched expanded vector control activities in specific areas connected to the cases as part of the country’s public health response.
“These measures included environmental inspections, species identification, post-reduction activities, larviciding, targeting fogging where Anopheles were found, and continued monitoring of mosquito populations,” the minister said during a press briefing.

The announcement came after officials confirmed that two male travelers from malaria-endemic regions were diagnosed with malaria after arriving in Antigua and Barbuda. One patient recovered and later departed the country, while the second died after being hospitalized in severe condition at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.
Joseph stressed that both infections were imported cases and that there is no evidence of local transmission.
Health authorities also activated epidemiological investigations, contact tracing and ongoing surveillance to monitor any potential public health risks.
While the Anopheles mosquito — the species responsible for spreading malaria — has been identified in Antigua and Barbuda, Joseph said surveillance indicates the mosquito population remains limited locally and that the risk to the general public remains very low.
The ministry urged residents to assist with mosquito control efforts by eliminating standing water around homes and workplaces, covering water storage containers, cleaning drains and gutters regularly, using mosquito repellents and ensuring window and door screens are properly maintained.
Officials also advised anyone experiencing fever or flu-like symptoms, particularly after international travel, to seek prompt medical attention.
