ABLP Holds National Thanksgiving Service Following Election Win

A thanksgiving service held Sunday at the St. John’s Pentecostal Church House of Restoration blended worship, politics and calls for national unity as members of the governing Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party gathered alongside clergy, supporters and state officials following the party’s election victory.

The event brought together Cabinet ministers, senators-designate, diplomats, church leaders and supporters in what organizers described as both a spiritual gathering and a moment of national reflection after the April 30 general election.

Throughout the service, speakers framed the election outcome as part of a broader “new season” for Antigua and Barbuda, with repeated references to gratitude, divine guidance and reconciliation after a heated campaign season.

The morning opened with the national anthem before prayers were offered for political leaders, the judiciary, churches, schools and families across the country. One prayer called on God to grant the nation “wisdom in the midst of confusion” and “peace in the midst of chaos.”

Host speakers described the gathering as more than a political celebration, saying it was intended to acknowledge “the need for divine guidance, wisdom, and unity” in governing the country.

Religious leaders repeatedly urged worshippers to give thanks not only for political stability but also for what they viewed as divine protection following Friday’s earthquake that was felt across Antigua and Barbuda and several neighboring islands. During a worship segment, congregants were asked to “mark yourself safe” and thank God “for sparing our island.”

Praise and worship dominated large sections of the service, with congregants singing hymns and gospel songs focused on grace, restoration and perseverance. Worship leaders encouraged attendees to celebrate “life, health and strength,” while others emphasized resilience through difficult periods.

The church also used the occasion to publicly recognize Antigua and Barbuda’s political leadership, introducing ministers and senators-designate before later correcting several ministry portfolios during the ceremony.

Apostle Dr. Stephen C. Andrews, who delivered the main sermon, spoke extensively about thanksgiving and national renewal, while urging leaders and citizens alike to remain grounded in faith and service.

Scripture readings from Psalm 103, Psalm 107 and 1 Chronicles 16 formed the spiritual foundation of the service, with repeated themes of gratitude, protection and covenant.

Video congratulatory messages from overseas religious leaders were also played during the event. Bishop Israel Ade Ajala of Colorado praised the government’s “decisive” victory and said international faith leaders would continue praying for Antigua and Barbuda’s prosperity.

Church leaders closed the service by pledging continued prayers for the government and for the country’s advancement, while encouraging citizens to pursue unity and national development.
