Runway incident causes minimal impact to flight operations at VC Bird International Airport

VC Bird International fully operational

1st April, 2024…Flights in and out of the VC Bird International Airport continue to operate normally and on schedule following an incident late Sunday afternoon where asphalt fragments of the runway were dislodged during the departure of a commercial carrier.

The maintenance crew was immediately mobilised following the incident, which did not cause any major or negative impact to flight operations at the airport.

The work to repair the affected area of the runway continued well into the night on Monday and is now fully completed.

To allow for the corrective maintenance to move ahead speedily, the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority reduced the declared runway operation distances to keep flight arrivals and departures on schedule during the course of Monday.

Minister of Aviation, the Hon. Charles Fernandez, who was at the airport on Sunday to get an up-close assessment of the damage, commended the team at the airport and the Ministry of Works for their speedy and professional attention to the incident.

The runway was closed at 5pm today (Monday 1st April) local time to allow the Ministry of Works to gain unimpeded access tocomplete the corrective maintenance work. The runway reopened at 7:30pm on Monday night.
