UPP Chairperson D. Gisele Isaac Raises Concerns Over Accommodation and Transportation for SIDS4 Conference Delegates

United Progressive Party (UPP) Chairperson D. Gisele Isaac expressed strong reservations about the arrangements for the upcoming SIDS4 conference in Antigua, scheduled for May.

Isaac’s concerns come in the context of Antigua’s initial plan to house delegates on a cruise ship, which was deemed too expensive.

As a result, last week, Prime Minister Gaston Browne made a call for residents with available accommodations to come forward and register with the Ministry.

Isaac stated, “The cost is prohibitive; that’s what they said last week.” She highlighted significant issues regarding accommodation and transportation for conference delegates, raising questions about accountability and planning.

Isaac emphasized the challenges faced by delegates, particularly regarding accommodation availability.

She criticized the timing of the announcement, noting, “You might have to put up some people, and the taxi drivers will come and pick you up.”

Isaac pointed out that planning for such events, including destination weddings, requires considerable advance preparation.

She added, “People plan in advance; people are going to have a destination wedding.”

Moreover, Isaac criticized the lack of clarity on transportation arrangements for conference attendees.

She highlighted the congestion and difficulties in commuting, especially during peak hours. Isaac questioned the accountability of authorities responsible for managing these logistical aspects, stating, “Who takes responsibility for this nonsense with the accommodation, this nonsense with the transportation?”

Isaac also referenced past incidents, such as challenges faced during the attempted hosting of Carifesta, expressing concern about potential embarrassment on the international stage due to inadequate conference planning.

She remarked, “I’m so hoping that we’re not terribly embarrassed in the eyes of the world by putting on a shoddy conference.”

The UPP Chairperson called for greater accountability and urged authorities to address these concerns promptly.

She emphasized the need for transparent and efficient planning to ensure the success of the SIDS4 conference and the comfort of all participants.
