Prime Minister Gaston Browne today promised significant wage increases for public sector workers over the next two to three years.

The commitment came during a broader discussion on economic expansion and public welfare initiatives, particularly emphasizing improvements within the hospitality sector on Pointe Fm today.

Speaking on the radio, the Prime Minister highlighted his administration’s efforts to boost the economy and create more lucrative opportunities for the workforce.

“We are expanding the economy and creating opportunities so that our citizens and residents can enjoy living standards that are second to none,” Browne stated.

Focusing on the hospitality industry, Browne urged local unions to advocate more aggressively for better compensation for hotel workers.

He expressed concern that while there is a push for substantial increases in public institutions, there is a noticeable lack of advocacy within the hotel sector, an area he sees as crucial for economic growth.

“Our government’s objective is to ensure that hotel workers and all public servants can enjoy pay that allows them to afford basic necessities like a mortgage and a car loan,” Browne added.

He stressed the importance of fair wage distribution, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are equitably shared among workers.

Reflecting on his administration’s policy, Browne reassured that the planned wage increases are designed to be sustainable and non-inflationary.

“While we are committed to improving pay, we must ensure that these adjustments do not trigger inflationary pressures. It’s about finding a balance that benefits everyone,” he explained.

The Prime Minister’s announcement is part of a larger narrative of improving worker conditions and supporting economic development in Antigua and Barbuda.

With these wage increases, Browne’s administration hopes to set a standard of living that matches the growing economic landscape of the country.

The prime minister also committed to another increase in the minimum wage in the future.
