Prime Minister Gaston Browne Calls for Increased Accommodation for SIDS4 Conference

Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has urged citizens to boost accommodation options ahead of the upcoming SIDS4 conference.

In a recent statement, Browne emphasized the importance of expanding lodging facilities to meet the demand from international guests.

“For years now, I’ve been encouraging Antiguans and Barbudans to build more properties,” stated Prime Minister Browne. He highlighted the incentives offered, including land at reduced rates and various tax concessions for property development and operation.

Despite these incentives, Browne noted a slow response from property owners. “The take-up has been very slow,” he remarked, expressing a desire for more participation from the local community.

Browne highlighted the potential benefits, citing the opportunity to accommodate conference attendees and generate revenue for property owners.

“If we had a number of properties with multiple rooms, we could have filled them for this conference,” he noted, emphasizing the need for quality accommodations to meet international standards.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that hosting events like the SIDS4 conference and the Cricket World Cup wouldn’t solve all financial challenges.

However, he emphasized the potential for economic gains through increased tourism and business activities.

“We’re not making promises, but this is an opportunity for property owners to earn a windfall,” Browne stated.

He encouraged property owners to contact the Ministry of Tourism to list their properties for potential guests, highlighting the importance of providing quality accommodations for international visitors.

Browne estimated a need for at least 2,000 additional rooms outside of traditional hotels and urged property owners to act quickly to capitalize on this opportunity.
