For the first time since the establishment of the UWI Five Islands Campus in Antigua & Barbuda, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has named one of the Caribbean nations Prime Minister’s that opposed the campus.

Speaking on Pointe FM on the future of higher education in the Caribbean, Prime Minister Gaston Browne weighed in on Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s apparent concerns to a new University of the West Indies (UWI) campus in Antigua.

“Andrew called me up, quite skeptical, concerned about financial viability. He said, ‘Gaston, I hope you can pay your bills because Jamaicans are paying your bills.’ This was his way of questioning our financial readiness for such an ambitious project,” Browne recounted.

During his radio interview, PM Browne relayed a complex series of interactions that highlighted the challenges and regional dynamics involved in expanding UWI’s presence.

The Antiguan leader revealed that Grenada had already advanced in similar educational initiatives, having passed legislation to facilitate the establishment of a campus on 80 acres of land.

“Let me tell you, my friends, it’s not just about building a campus; it’s about strengthening our collective ability to uplift our people through education,” Browne asserted.

The discourse between the two leaders also hinted at underlying tensions among CARICOM members, with some leaders seemingly wary of Antigua’s swift moves to advance its educational agenda.

However, Browne praised the spirit of cooperation that ultimately prevailed, allowing for constructive dialogue on how to best serve the educational needs of the Caribbean populace.

The conversation also veered into the challenges posed by regional dynamics, where Browne noted some resistance from other Caribbean leaders.

“It appears some are wary of Antigua pushing to the front of the line. But let me be clear, this is not about getting ahead; it’s about lifting the entire region together,” he stated.

. “When one of us stands in the way of educational advancement, it’s not just a setback for one island; it impacts all of us,” Browne argued.

UWI FIC was established in 2019 despite local and regional skepticism. It has a student base about 700 and recently acquired an US$80 million loan to expand the campus.
