Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressed concerns regarding marijuana use during a radio broadcast yesterday, emphasizing the need for respect and adherence to current laws.

Browne shared an incident involving a group of pastors who were troubled by young people smoking marijuana within the confines of a church sanctuary, highlighting a broader issue of respecting public spaces and community values.

“We have decriminalized the use of marijuana and legalized it for medicinal purposes,” Browne stated, affirming the government’s stance on the therapeutic benefits of marijuana. However, he clarified that recreational use remains illegal, largely due to international obligations and potential sanctions against Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne stressed that the discussion was not an attack on marijuana or its users but a call for consideration and respect.

“You have to respect people’s values,” he said, noting that while many are tolerant and open to marijuana use, others are not comfortable with it, especially in sensitive environments like places of worship.

The Prime Minister reminded citizens of the legal prohibitions against smoking marijuana and cigarettes in public places.

“The use of cigarettes, marijuana, any form of smoke in public is prohibited by law,” he reiterated. This reminder extends to events like funerals, where public smoking has become a common sight, which is against the law.

Browne urged individuals to enjoy marijuana within the privacy of their homes, ensuring that the comfort and health of others are not compromised. He emphasized the importance of respecting others’ right to a smoke-free environment, whether it involves marijuana or cigarettes.

Browne called for increased respect and consideration within the community. “We have to become more respectful,” he concluded.
