PAHO team on island to support national deployment of National Emergency Medical Team for SIDS4 Conference

The 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States will benefit from a major initiative being pursued by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to establish a National Emergency Medical Team (N-EMT).

Antigua and Barbuda is continuing the process of creating its N-EMT, an initiative introduced by the World Health Organisation and piloted by the Pan American Health Organisation in the western hemisphere.

With thousands of conference delegates expected on island for the conference, the opportune time emerged for the resources of the N-EMT to be used in the deployment of a Medical Post at the conference venue of the American University of Antigua (AUA).

The Local Organising Committee of SIDS4 has designated appropriate space on the AUA campus where the Medical Post will be set up and preparations are now in full gear to ensure that it meets all the necessary requirements for a conference of this magnitude and nature.

In this connection, a PAHO team, headed by Luis de la Fuente and Andres Sanz, is now on island to facilitate seamless deployment and the mobilisation of all phases of preparation for the EMT Medical Post to be fully operational during the SIDS4 Conference.

PAHO’s commitment in this pivotal endeavour is the provision of the technical support that will ensure that an emergency medical response system is fully available to anyone who may require its services not only during the SIDS Conference, but for the Cricket World Cup matches and beyond.

As a result, it is facilitating a technical workshop, which runs for the week, with the objective of enabling Antigua and Barbuda to efficiently and safely deploy its Type 1 EMT during the SIDS4 Conference. The one-week session will also seek to obtain feedback for the self-sustainable development of a fixed Tye 1 EMT for health contingencies in Antigua and Barbuda.
