Member of Parliament (MP) Melford Nicholas is pointing fingers at the two candidates vying for the leadership of the United Progressive Party (UPP).
Nicholas asserted that the ongoing debate in Parliament was being used as an audition for the UPP leadership, rather than a genuine discussion on legislative matters.
During his address to the Parliament, MP Nicholas referenced literary history, drawing parallels to Shakespearean drama.
He highlighted the concept of “a play within a play,” likening the parliamentary debate to this theatrical technique used by the renowned playwright William Shakespeare.
Nicholas stated, “There was a time in English literature when great Dr. Alfred Wilkinson brought to my attention at the Antigua Grammar School that the great bard William Shakespeare had a way of inserting a play within a play, and he used to refer to that as a mask.”
He further elaborated, “What we have here, Mr. Speaker, taking place right now is a play within a play. We are asked here to debate this bill, and what we have heard from the last two submissions from the members on the other side is the other play that is taking place.”
The MP went on to suggest that the speeches made by the candidates during the debate were aimed at impressing the electorate and positioning themselves favorably for the UPP leadership role.
He characterized this phenomenon as “an act of a play within a play,” emphasizing the political dynamics at play within the parliamentary setting.
The UPP leadership contest has been a topic of keen interest, with both candidates actively engaging in public discourse and parliamentary proceedings to bolster their leadership credentials.
