Dear Editor,

It is normal for the political leader of a party to be the first elected in a party convention.

It is done everywhere, and Antigua and Barbuda is no exception.

This is so because the political leader is the most important person in the party.

He or she leads their party and also the nation if elected in a general election, and if chosen by their MP peers to be leader.

So here is the question. Why did the returning officer, announce the election of the chairman first, knowing that this is against the norm, and would be a very long process with the votes taken from six boxes and all the votes individually called and shown for all the judges to see?

When you were asked why you did this, it is reported that you said that you were told.

Told by whom? This must be known because then whoever told you to do that would have to explain where they got the authority to make this on-the-spot decision.

There were persons who came specifically to vote for the leader. They were on their way to work, other important events, etc.

They knew the vote for leader would be first.

The word is that some persons had to fight hard to get the vote for leader moved from the last place where they put it to right after the chairman vote, because the intention was to make the voting for the leader last.

Many had left during and after the count for the chairmanship.

By the time the vote was called for leader many people had left and there was a lot of hustling people and everything looking chaotic in the small voting area.
