Kelly Friday, 29, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for manslaughter over the death of his uncle, Selwyn Mannix.

The incident occurred on September 11, 2021, at Point Wharf, when Mannix confronted Friday over a $50 debt, attacking him with a seven-foot wattle stick.

In self-defense, Friday stabbed his uncle six times.

Despite his injuries, including a swollen head, thigh injury, and broken hand, Friday’s defense attorneys, Wendel Alexander and Wayne Marsh, argued for acquittal.

The jury convicted him of manslaughter instead of murder, acknowledging the provocation and sparing him a life sentence.
