Antigua and Barbuda Enhances Security for ICC T20 World Cup with New Legislation–CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP
The Antigua and Barbuda Lower House of Parliament has passed legislation enabling foreign police forces to operate within the nation during the T20 Cricket World Cup.
Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin, addressing the parliament, emphasized the importance of this legislation for the safe and orderly conduct of the event scheduled for June.
“This bill facilitates a crucial security collaboration by allowing police officers from the countries participating in the World Cup to have the same rights and powers as our local forces,” explained Benjamin.
“These measures are in the interest of maintaining the highest security standards for both the players and the thousands of expected international spectators.”

During his speech, Benjamin clarified that the visiting police forces would operate under the direct control and order of the Antiguan Commissioner of Police, ensuring that their actions remain strictly regulated.
“This is about propping up the safety and security of all visitors. The presence of international police forces will supplement our efforts in handling large crowds and potential security threats more effectively,” he stated.
The Attorney General reassured the parliament and the public that the implementation of this law is aligned with international security standards and similar arrangements made during previous international sporting events.
“We are not alone in this approach. This is a harmonized piece of legislation across the region where the cricket is taking place, ensuring a unified security protocol,” Benjamin added.

The passage of the bill was met with broad approval in the House, with members recognizing the need for enhanced security measures during such a significant international event.
The law is part of a broader regional effort to ensure that the Caribbean remains a safe and attractive destination for international sports and cultural events.
The AG did not give details as to where the foreign police officers will come from, however, it is expected that they may come from the Regional Security System and other friendly governments participating in the World Cup.
As Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host the ICC T20 World Cup, this new legislation marks a significant step towards ensuring that the event is not only successful but also secure.
