Governor General Welcomes $10,000 Grant for Centenarians

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has welcomed the government’s decision to provide a $10,000 grant to each centenarian as Antigua and Barbuda observes Centenarians Week 2026.
In a national address marking the annual observance, Sir Rodney described centenarians as some of the country’s “greatest treasures” and said their lives offer valuable lessons in perseverance, faith, sacrifice and service.
He said the nation’s oldest citizens have witnessed major historical events, including economic hardships, natural disasters, technological change and Antigua and Barbuda’s transition from colonial rule to independence. Their experiences, wisdom and resilience continue to inspire younger generations, he noted.

Sir Rodney said he was especially pleased that, for the first time, the government has decided to honor centenarians with a grant of $10,000 each. He commended the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation and others involved in implementing the initiative, describing it as a tangible expression of national gratitude and respect.
The Governor General also highlighted the long-standing tradition of presenting congratulatory messages from the Sovereign to citizens reaching their 100th birthday and beyond. He said he and Lady Williams have had the privilege of presenting these greetings to many centenarians over the years, including those celebrating their 101st, 102nd and later birthdays.
Describing Centenarians Week as “more than longevity,” Sir Rodney said the observance celebrates legacy and affirms the value of the contributions made by older citizens. He urged the nation to continue honoring, respecting and caring for those who helped shape modern Antigua and Barbuda.
He concluded by extending congratulations and best wishes to all centenarians celebrating this year.
