ECAB workers take industrial action, reportedly over pay

Workers at the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) arereportedly at odds with management over salaries.

Reports say that workers walked off the job on Thursday, February22, 2024, while other sources claim the employees never turned upfor work. Instead, they reportedly met with their representatives atthe Antigua & Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU).

Reportedly, a meeting about the grievances impacting thedisgruntled workers was expected to be organized with the LabourDepartment.

Customers who showed up at the bank’s branches experiencedsome difficulty with regard to timely services, as seniormanagement had to hold the fort.

In a media release, the bank apologized for the delays, saying theywere due to circumstances outside of its control.

The financial institution did not go into any details about the natureof these conditions, however.

Apparently, this action by the workers did not only impact the bankon Thursday. It is expected to continue into Friday, February 23, asthe bank has stated that the delay in in-branch and customer-support services will be experienced for two days.
