Christal Clashing’s Quest to Become Antigua and Barbuda’s First Female Freediving Record Holder
Antigua and Barbuda – Christal Clashing, a native of Antigua and Barbuda, has embarked on a mission to make history as the first female freediver from her country to set a national record.
Her journey began in 2019 during her initial freediving training, where she discovered a passion for the sport that propelled her towards new heights.
Reflecting on her early experiences, Clashing recalls, “On my first few attempts during my introductory freedive training, I felt my brain was screaming at me asking me, ‘what are you doing??’ But after understanding what equipment setup worked for me, I became passionate about freediving as a sport to train and develop for.”
Determined to achieve her goal, Clashing trains diligently whenever conditions permit in Antigua.
Her sights are set on the Deep Dominica freediving competition, scheduled from July 28th to August 4th, 2024.

However, to compete at her best and set a national record, she recognizes the need for specialized training in Dominica, known for offering the best diving conditions in the Eastern Caribbean.
“I hope to become the first female freediver in Antigua and Barbuda to set a national record at the Deep Dominica freediving competition,” Clashing shares, emphasizing the significance of this achievement for herself and aspiring water athletes in the Caribbean region.
Clashing’s athletic journey is not limited to freediving. She brings a wealth of experience as Antigua and Barbuda’s first female Olympic swimmer and as part of the first all-black team to row an ocean. These accomplishments highlight her resilience and pioneering spirit in aquatic sports.
Acknowledging the impact of her achievements on future generations, Clashing adds, “Being a pioneer in aquatic spaces lets others in the region see what’s possible and provides a benchmark to beat.”
