China Media Group has donated video cameras and media equipment to the national broadcasting service of Antigua and Barbuda. The formal handover was held in the capital Saint John’s on Friday. Here’s more.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne was joined at the ceremony by Foreign Minister Paul Chet Greene and Information, Communications Minister Melford Walter Nicholas, and China’s Ambassador Zhang Yanling.

A donation agreement was signed between the government of the Carribean island nation and China Media Group, together with a formal letter to hand over the donated equipment.

Representatives of China Media Group and local journalists were also in attendance.

GASTON BROWNE Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda “Let me take this opportunity to thank China Media Group for giving us this important gift. In January of this year we visited China.

ABS (Antigua and Barbara Broadcasting Service) made this request. Although time is very short. They will do their best to help us build capacity for the Fourth Conference (Small Island States). We are very grateful.”

The donation arrived as Antigua and Barbuda prepared to host the Fourth International Conference on Small Islands Developing States this month.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Paul Chet Greene said the assistance has enabled the country to make substantial improvements in media technology and has facilitated cultural and people-to-people exchanges with China.

Information Minister Melford Walter Nicholas said he welcomes colleagues from China Media Group and other Chinese media organizations to visit Antigua and Barbuda, conduct interviews and reports.

ZHANG YANLING Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda “Media cooperation is a very important part of China-Antigua relations. This donation of CMG equipment will greatly promote media cooperation between the two countries, and will improve media reporting capabilities and effectiveness. In particular, it will play a very important role in covering the Fourth International Conference on Small Island States.”

The donation from China Media Group includes digital switchers, video cameras and other broadcast equipment.

The Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Service is the country’s national television and radio broadcaster.

It was founded in 2000 and operates television and radio stations, as well as new media platforms.
