American University of Antigua College of Medicine has begun accepting transfer students into its preclinical and clinical programs, creating a new pathway for eligible medical students to complete their Doctor of Medicine degrees at the institution.

The university said the expanded capacity for the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 intakes allows qualified students from accredited U.S. medical schools and internationally recognized institutions to apply for advanced standing.

AUA President Dr. Peter Bell said the university had previously been unable to accept transfer students but decided to expand the program after receiving requests from students seeking to continue their medical education at the Antigua-based institution.

“We were approached by a large number of students who would like to come to AUA and have heard their requests, worked with our regulators and are now in the position to accept transfer students,” Bell said.

Students may be admitted into either AUA’s preclinical program in Antigua or, if they have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, into the university’s clinical program at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States.

The university said each transfer application will be reviewed individually to determine eligibility and appropriate placement within the curriculum, with admissions and academic staff working closely with applicants throughout the process.

Bell described the move as “a monumental step” for the institution and said it provides students with another opportunity to complete their medical education at AUA.
