The leader of the Hispanic community in Antigua and Barbuda, Alex Martínez, has issued a strong warning to his fellow Dominicans to remain cautious and avoid confrontation amid rising anti-Dominican sentiment following the recent murder of a nine-year-old girl.

In a Facebook Live address, originally delivered in Spanish and translated, Martínez expressed concern over social media posts inciting violence against Dominicans, stressing that innocent people should not suffer for the actions of one individual.

“There are voices inciting hate against us, calling for attacks on Dominicans. This is dangerous. Innocent people should not pay for the actions of one person,” Martínez stated. “We must remain vigilant and avoid confrontation. Retaliation will only escalate tensions.”

His comments come amid reports that a Dominican national may be implicated in the crime, leading to online discussions suggesting retaliatory actions against members of the Dominican community. He condemned such rhetoric, calling for unity and justice rather than division and fear.

Martínez urged Dominican nationals in Antigua and Barbuda to stay aware of their surroundings and ensure their safety. “I tell all Dominicans to be careful. Watch your homes, watch your streets, and stay out of trouble. We cannot allow ourselves to be caught up in conflict,” he said.

He also called on local authorities to intervene in de-escalating tensions and ensuring that all residents, regardless of nationality, are treated fairly. “The authorities must act responsibly to prevent any violence. No one should be targeted because of their nationality,” he added.

Martínez acknowledged the grief and anger surrounding the child’s murder and extended his condolences to the family. However, he emphasized that justice should be pursued through proper legal channels, not through acts of retaliation or discrimination.

“We all want justice for this little girl. We demand answers, just as we demand answers for other unsolved cases, including the murder of Dominican national Jennifer Bridge. But justice must be served correctly, not through blame or violence,” he asserted.
