ABSA and Hopeful Hearts Foundation Partner for Outreach Visit to Sunshine Home for Girls

The Antigua and Barbuda Students’ Association (ABSA) of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, in collaboration with the Hopeful Hearts Foundation (HHF), visited the Sunshine Home for Girls in Johnson’s Point, Antigua, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, as part of a joint community outreach initiative.

The visit combined charitable giving with meaningful engagement, as the organizations donated a variety of essential items to the home, including hygiene products, school supplies, hair-care products and books.

Beyond the donations, the visit provided an opportunity for the students and members of the Foundation to interact with the girls and facilitate discussions on topics relevant to their personal development and future aspirations. Conversations explored consent and healthy boundaries, building meaningful connections, discerning the people one allows into their lives, networking and developing relationships that can contribute to future career opportunities, overcoming bullying, dreaming big and remaining resilient in the face of discouragement.

The group also engaged the girls in open conversations about everyday life and current issues, while taking time to learn more about their individual personalities, interests and experiences. The interaction created an environment where the girls could ask questions, share their perspectives and build connections with the visiting group.

During the visit, representatives also learned more about the work of the Sunshine Home and its role in supporting vulnerable young women. The Home was established on March 27, 1992, by Major Joycelyn Jonas-Maxam after she became concerned about the abuse experienced by young girls in Antigua. Today, the Home operates under the Salvation Army and provides its residents with protection, education, medical and emotional support, spiritual guidance and opportunities to develop self-worth and independence. More than 180 girls have been supported by the Home since its establishment. Major Barbara Forrester is the current administrator.

The Hopeful Hearts Foundation, founded by National Youth Ambassador Kristine Louisa, has similarly focused its work on youth empowerment, education, humanitarian assistance and community development across Antigua and Barbuda. The Foundation has undertaken initiatives including school outreach, motivational programmes, donation drives and community service projects.

For ABSA, the visit reflects its commitment to extending its impact beyond the university environment and contributing to the development and well-being of young people in Antigua and Barbuda. The collaboration with Hopeful Hearts Foundation demonstrated the value of combining resources, knowledge and mentorship to create meaningful community impact.

The visit concluded with the shared message that young people should recognize their potential, surround themselves with positive influences, pursue their goals boldly and understand that their circumstances do not have to determine their future.
