Open Letter : The Suffering of Public Works Employees

Dear Editor,

I write today not as a representative of any political organization nor as a public figure but more so as a concerned citizen speaking on behalf of many hardworking men and women who are feeling enraged yet voiceless.

During the election period, hundreds of individuals were recruited to work under the Ministry of Works and Housing. Many of these workers went through lengthy application and selection processes, days of waiting to be interviewed believing they had finally secured an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families. For some, it was a ray of hope during difficult economic times.

Yet after reporting to work faithfully day after day, many found themselves trapped in confusion. Months passed without proper to no payment at all! Workers continued working while receiving little more than promises and excuses! Yes, Recent protests over unpaid salaries, overtime and concerns regarding employment status have brought national attention to this troubling situation but that too was followed by more promises and excuses!

Imagine leaving home every morning, working honestly for months, only to return to your family empty handed. What do you tell your children when they ask why there is no money for food?? What does a husband say to his wife when bills continue piling up and there is nothing to give? As a provider??

After months of frustration and empty promises some workers reportedly received a payment of approximately $900! While some may argue that “receiving something is better than receiving nothing”, let us be honest here…how can any adult with responsibilities reasonably survive off 900 ECD???!! after working for months and receiving only a small fraction of what they earned? With maybe having at least 2 months worth of bills outstanding???

With schools preparing to reopen, parents are faced with paying various school related expenses. Many households are already struggling under the weight of rent, utilities and other obligations. For parents raising two, three or even four children, the burden must be overwhelming!

But here’s the BIG question…who is being held accountable for this trickery? Or who is TO BE held accountable?

Our leaders often encourage citizens to seek honest employment and stay away from crime. But what message are we sending when individuals who choose to work are left waiting months for their wages? While criminal activity can never be justified, we cannot ignore the growing frustration and hopelessness felt by many young people who believe they have done everything right and still cannot provide for their families.
No worker should have to protest for wages they have honestly earned.

The nation is hurting! Hope is fading and confidence in the system continues to erode.
This letter is a cry for transparency and accountability.
