Catholic Diocese of St. John’s–Basseterre Mourns Death of Barbadian Priest Fr. Leonard Alfonso

— The Roman Catholic Diocese of St. John’s–Basseterre has joined the Diocese of Bridgetown in mourning the death of Fr. Leonard Alfonso, a longtime Barbadian priest who died Monday morning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados following a period of illness.

In a statement, Bishop Robert Llanos, together with the clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese of St. John’s–Basseterre, extended condolences to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown and its bishop, the Most Rev. Neil Scantlebury.

The diocese also expressed sympathy to Fr. Alfonso’s relatives, friends and loved ones as they grieve his passing.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. Our Lady, Queen of Heaven, pray for him,” the statement said.

According to the Diocese of Bridgetown, Fr. Alfonso died at the age of 88 after serving approximately 40 years in the priesthood. His death marks the end of decades of pastoral ministry and service to the Catholic Church in Barbados.

The Diocese of St. John’s–Basseterre said it stands in solidarity with the Church in Barbados during this time of mourning.
