National Solid Waste Management Authority Launches Pre-Carnival Clean-Up of St. John’s City

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), in collaboration with the Central Board of Health, has commenced an intensive Pre-Carnival Clean-Up Initiative throughout St. John’s City as part of preparations for Antigua Carnival 2026 #Feeltherhythm.

The operation is being carried out daily from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. until completion, allowing crews to undertake extensive cleaning activities with minimal disruption to businesses, residents, and motorists.

Since the initiative began, significant progress has been made to the following areas.

• 12th–13th July: Newgate Street and Church Street
• 13th–14th July: Long Street, High Street, and St. Mary’s Street
• 14th–15th July: Crews will continue works along Tanner Street and Redcliffe Street.

The clean-up operation includes a range of activities aimed at improving the city’s appearance and safeguarding public health, including cleaning and washing of drains, removal of debris and accumulated waste, grass cutting and vegetation management and general street and public space cleaning.

Upon completion of each cleaning activities, the Central Board of Health (CBH) will conduct fogging and disinfecting of drains and surrounding areas as part of its ongoing mosquito control and public health programme.

This collaborative initiative demonstrates the shared commitment of both NSWMA and the CBH with ensuring that St. John’s City is clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors during the Carnival festivities.

The NSWMA encourages the public to support this initiative by disposing of waste responsibly, refraining from littering, and helping to keep streets, drains, and public spaces clean. Every individual’s contribution plays an important role in maintaining a healthy environment and preserving the improvements being made throughout the city.
