Former Athlete on Trial for Alleged Sexual Abuse of Daughter

A former athlete is standing trial in the High Court on allegations that he sexually abused his daughter over a period of more than a year.
The case, being heard before Justice Ann Marie Smith and an all-female jury, involves two counts of serious indecency and one count of indecent assault.
Prosecutors allege that between April 2022 and April 2023, the accused committed a series of offences against the child while she was in his care. The complainant, who testified this week, told the court that the alleged incidents occurred when her father’s girlfriend was away from home.
She also testified that she was fearful of returning to live with her father after being sent to stay with her grandmother.
During cross-examination, the child denied suggestions from defence attorney Wendel Alexander that she had been coached to make the allegations, maintaining that her account was truthful.
The trial continues.
