The Cabinet has approved an agreement with Atlantic Ship Breakers Antigua Limited for the removal, processing and export of scrap metal from Antigua and Barbuda, including material accumulated at Cook’s Land.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said Friday that the agreement forms part of the government’s efforts to improve environmental conditions, enhance public safety and restore lands occupied by scrap metal and derelict materials.

Under the arrangement, Atlantic Ship Breakers Antigua Limited will undertake the project at no direct cost to the government. Officials said the agreement will facilitate the clearing and rehabilitation of the site while addressing longstanding concerns about the accumulation of scrap metal.

The company will be responsible for providing all equipment, personnel and other resources needed to carry out the project. Its responsibilities will include the removal, processing, compacting and loading of identified scrap metal.

The agreement also requires the company to maintain certified weighing and record-keeping systems and arrange for the transportation and export of the materials in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Cabinet was advised that the initiative is expected to contribute to environmental cleanup efforts while improving safety conditions in affected areas.
