The Hon. H. Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, the Tourism Authority, and the Ministry of Tourism join the people of Antigua and Barbuda and the wider tourism fraternity in mourning the passing of Theodore “Ted” Isaac, CM, one of the nation’s most distinguished tourism pioneers and industry leaders.

For more than four decades, Ted Isaac stood at the forefront of the development of Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry, helping to shape the sector into one of the country’s leading economic pillars. His passing marks the end of an era and the loss of a man whose influence, leadership, and mentorship touched virtually every aspect of tourism in Antigua and Barbuda.

Mr. Isaac etched his name into the history of the industry as the first Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Board of Directors and the first indigenous Antiguan to serve as Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association. Throughout his distinguished career, he held senior leadership positions at some of Antigua and Barbuda’s most iconic properties, including the Royal Antiguan Hotel, Jumby Bay Resort, and most notably, Jolly Beach Resort, where he served as one of the longest-serving and most impactful General Managers in the resort’s history.

His contributions extended beyond hotel operations. He served on numerous tourism and national boards, including the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority, and was a respected voice in tourism policy, destination development, and industry standards. His outstanding service earned him the national honour of Commander of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit (CM) and, in 2022, the prestigious ABHTA Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to tourism.

Ted Isaac was also a passionate advocate for Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural heritage. A devoted supporter of the arts, and particularly the development and promotion of the steelpan artform, he understood the importance of preserving and promoting our cultural identity as a cornerstone of the tourism experience. Through his leadership within the hospitality sector, he ensured meaningful support for the Gemonites“Moods of Pan”, helping to strengthen the connection between tourism and the creative industries.

Commenting on Mr. Isaac’s passing, Minister Fernandez stated:

“Theodore ‘Ted’ Isaac was a towering figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry. He was a visionary leader, a mentor to generations of tourism professionals, and a proud son of the soil who dedicated his life to advancing our country’s hospitality sector. His legacy is not measured only by the hotels he managed or the organizations he led, but by the countless lives he impacted, the careers he helped shape, and the standards of excellence he championed.

Mr. Isaac understood that tourism was fundamentally about people. He invested in people, believed in people, and inspired people. He was equally passionate about preserving our culture and ensuring that the arts, especially pan music, remained an integral part of the Antiguan and Barbudan tourism experience.

Our nation owes him a tremendous debt of gratitude. His contributions helped lay the foundation upon which our tourism industry continues to thrive today. We mourn his passing, but we acknowledge and celebrate a life of service, leadership, and remarkable achievement.”

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, and Tourism Authority, Minister Fernandez extends heartfelt condolences to Mr. Isaac’s family, friends, former colleagues, the tourism community, and all those whose lives were touched by his wisdom, generosity, and leadership.

May they find comfort in the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind and in the knowledge that his contributions to Antigua and Barbuda will continue to inspire future generations.

May the soul of Theodore “Ted” Isaac, CM, rest in eternal peace.
