PM Browne pays tribute to Mary-Clare Hurst at candlelight vigil

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has paid tribute to former Minister of State and longtime Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party supporter Mary-Clare Hurst during an emotional candlelight vigil held on Friday night.
Addressing party supporters, family members and friends, Browne described Hurst as a loyal and steadfast member of the ABLP who remained committed to the party throughout her life.
“We are gathered here this evening, with heavy hearts and profound sadness, but also with profound gratitude as we pay tribute to our fallen comrade,” Browne said.

He praised Hurst’s decades of service to the Labour movement, calling her “a woman of conviction” and “a woman of courage”.

Browne also reflected on their long political relationship, recalling her support during the party’s 2005 convention and other challenging periods in the ABLP’s history.
He said Hurst remained loyal during difficult political moments, including after the 2023 general election.
“True comrades reveal themselves during difficult periods,” Browne told mourners. “Comrade Mary-Clare Hurst stood firm.”
Supporters gathered with candles to honour Hurst’s life and public service, sharing prayers and memories of the woman affectionately known as “Tanty”.
The ceremony ended with tributes and prayers as supporters celebrated her legacy of loyalty and service to Antigua and Barbuda.
