Jonathan Wehner Says ‘A Village Really Did Raise This Young Man’ After Appointment as UPP Senator
Newly appointed opposition senator Jonathan Wehner has publicly thanked his family, church community, teachers, friends and supporters after being selected by Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle to serve in the Senate.
In a lengthy statement shared Sunday, Wehner described the appointment as an honour and said he was grateful for the many people who helped shape his life and political journey.

“It is an honour to be selected by my Political Leader and Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Jamale Pringle, to take up this responsibility to represent and serve Antigua & Barbuda, the youths of our nation and the United Progressive Party,” Wehner wrote.
The young senator thanked God, his parents and extended family for their constant support, saying they had been “ever present and faithful” in raising and caring for him.
He also acknowledged the role of the ECBM circuit of churches in his spiritual development and credited teachers throughout his educational journey for providing encouragement and guidance.
Wehner reserved special praise for members of the United Progressive Party, describing them as a family that stood by him through both good and difficult times.
“My brothers and sisters of the UPP have always watched over me as their own blood relative,” he stated.
The senator-designate also thanked friends from childhood and colleagues from the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda, while jokingly pleading with them not to share embarrassing stories or nicknames about him online.
“I’m just begging y’all not to embarrass me by putting any nicknames or stories on social media,” he said.
Closing his message, Wehner reflected on the support he has received over the years, adding: “A village really did raise this young man.”
Wehner is among the opposition senators selected following the United Progressive Party’s defeat in the April 30 general election, which saw the ABLP secure a fourth consecutive term in office. He was formally appointed during Monday’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House alongside the other opposition senators.
