Staff at the Antigua Port Authority have gathered in St John’s to pay tribute to former chairman and former Government Senator Mary-Clare Hurst following news of her sudden death.

The sombre ceremony saw employees pause operations for a moment of silence in honour of Hurst, who was widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s public and political life.

Port Manager Darwin Telemaque described her as a transformational leader, highlighting her role in strengthening and modernising the Port Authority during a key period in its development. He also praised her professionalism, dedication and long-standing contribution to national service.

Wreaths were laid at the entrance of the authority as staff and colleagues reflected on her legacy.

Hurst made history as one of the first female chairpersons of the Antigua Port Authority Board and also served as the first female General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced her death earlier in the day, prompting tributes from across the political and professional spectrum. Many have described her as a resilient and visionary leader who played a significant role in public service and mentorship.

No further details surrounding her death have been released.
