20th Saharan Dust Surge Brings Moderate Air Quality to Antigua and Barbuda

Moderate Air Quality Expected to Persist Until Saturday as Saharan Dust Affects Antigua and Barbuda

Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are being advised that air quality has deteriorated to moderate levels due to the 20th notable Saharan dust surge of 2026, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service.

An Air Quality Bulletin issued at 11:55 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, indicates that the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to remain between 51 and 70, placing it in the Moderate category with an Air Pollution Alert Level II. The advisory remains in effect until Saturday.

The Met Office said the elevated particulate matter, specifically PM2.5 and PM10, is associated with the influx of Saharan dust affecting the country.

While the health risk for the general population is considered low, the bulletin warns that people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution, including those with asthma, respiratory or heart disease, older adults and children, may experience health effects and should remain aware of changing conditions.

The Meteorological Service noted that air quality remains acceptable for most people, but a small number of individuals who are especially sensitive to air pollution could face moderate health concerns.

As a precaution, active children and adults, as well as people with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion while the advisory remains in effect.

The public is encouraged to monitor updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service through its official communication channels as conditions evolve.
