George Wehner, the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate in the January 14, 2025, by-election for St. Peter, has called on voters to critically evaluate the governing Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) recent activities in the constituency.
Speaking at his first rally, Wehner accused the government of making superficial, last-minute efforts to sway public opinion, while neglecting St. Peter for years.
Wehner alleged that recent road improvements and other infrastructure projects were politically motivated, describing them as “empty promises” designed to secure votes.
“Since the announcement of my candidacy, the concrete trucks have been rolling in,” he said, emphasizing that the government’s sudden interest in the constituency reflects an insincere attempt to address longstanding issues.
The candidate criticized the administration for failing to deliver meaningful development, citing poor road conditions, neglected schools, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure in communities like Parham Town, Gunthorpes, and Lightfoot West.
He urged voters to consider the long-term impact of their choices and prioritize candidates who are genuinely invested in improving their lives.
Wehner also called attention to the challenges facing local fishers and farmers, accusing the government of undermining their livelihoods through questionable land and licensing deals.
He vowed to prioritize food security, youth education, and community development if elected.
Wehner’s message has centered on accountability and the need for voters to reject what he described as the Labour Party’s “pattern of neglect.” “Together, we aspire; together, we rise,” he said, rallying the crowd to unite for meaningful change in St. Peter.
The by-election, set for January 14, promises to be a closely watched contest, with Wehner positioning himself as a champion of the people and a vocal critic of the current administration.
