Prime Minister Gaston Browne has dismissed a legal challenge against newly elected MP Randy Baltimore as “frivolous,” insisting that the case will not affect his swearing-in or tenure.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne programme, Browne downplayed the significance of the petition filed following the St. Philip’s North by-election, describing it as lacking merit.

“I’d rather call it a useless litigation… it is a frivolous litigation and that is going nowhere,” Browne said.

He sought to reassure the public that the legal action would have no practical impact on Baltimore’s position, noting that the matter does not create any uncertainty around the outcome of the election.

“It will not stop the swearing in,” Browne added, urging citizens not to be distracted by the case.

The petition, filed in the High Court, challenges aspects of Baltimore’s candidacy and election. However, Browne maintained that the government will respond through the appropriate legal channels while remaining confident in the strength of its position.

“We will just respond accordingly as required by law, but that one does not create any anxiety whatsoever,” he said.

Baltimore secured victory in the St. Philip’s North by-election earlier this month, a result that strengthened the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s position ahead of an anticipated general election.

Browne characterised the legal challenge as part of ongoing political manoeuvring, but signalled that the administration does not expect it to alter the outcome or delay parliamentary proceedings.
