VIDEO: Ministry of Works Employees Protest Over Outstanding Pay

Employees at the Ministry of Works staged protest action Tuesday morning, demanding payment of outstanding overtime and wages reportedly owed to workers.

The demonstration took place outside the ministry’s headquarters on St. John’s Street, where employees gathered for a meeting to discuss the way forward.

Government truck drivers joined the action in solidarity, parking trucks along the roadway and causing traffic congestion in the area, according to video footage recorded by George Wehner.

Workers from several departments, including the motor pool, roads division, traffic light unit and quarry, reportedly participated.

Shop steward Mr. Peters said some long-serving employees are owed overtime payments dating back to 2014. He also claimed workers hired in April have not received their wages.

“We want our money — all our money,” Peters said. “Until we get our money, we are not working.”

Peters said employees were no longer prepared to accept verbal promises of payment and would return to work once the outstanding money was paid.

He said workers had previously staged protest action and received assurances that the matter would be addressed, but the payments remained outstanding.

There was no immediate public response from the Ministry of Works.
