Veteran broadcaster Dave Lester Payne has called for the return of former United Progressive Party (UPP) political leader Harold Lovell to run as a candidate in the next general election in the All Saints West Constituency.

Payne’s call has garnered support from Winston “Fled” Henry, an outspoken UPP supporter and former Public Relations Officer.

During a passionate broadcast last week, Payne expressed his disappointment over the recent resignation of Anthony Smith from the UPP to join the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration. He emphasized that Smith’s departure should be seen as a defection rather than a resignation, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Payne revealed his personal investment in Smith’s political journey, sharing his deep disappointment in Smith’s departure.

“I voted for him because I wanted to vote for the UPP. He got up and left, and that was a deep disappointment for me,” he stated. “I could not digest my food or sleep when I heard about his defection. For the sake of the young man and my constituency, I prayed it was wrong.”

The call for Lovell’s return comes at a crucial time for the UPP as the party seeks to regain its footing and prepare for the next general election.

Both Payne and Henry are hopeful that Lovell’s return will inspire confidence and bring about the necessary change for the UPP to succeed.
