Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to education and regional academic development is taking a major step forward with the expansion of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus. Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in his 2025 Budget presentation, announced that the first phase of the expansion will commence next year, backed by an $80 million concessional loan from the Saudi Fund for Development.
This significant investment will not only enhance the campus’s capacity but also position it as a premier institution for higher education in the Eastern Caribbean.
The initial phase of the project includes the construction of several key facilities:
- Dormitories: The new housing accommodations will support the campus’s growing enrollment and attract more regional and international students.
- Instructional Complexes: Modern facilities will be built to provide state-of-the-art learning environments for students.
- Primary School: A Five Islands Primary School will be constructed, integrating the campus further into the local community and offering high-quality education to younger students.
Prime Minister Browne underscored the importance of the expansion, stating, “This investment will elevate the UWI Five Islands Campus to new heights, providing opportunities for our people and strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s position as a hub for education in the region.”
Since its establishment, the UWI Five Islands Campus has seen a steady increase in enrollment, which now exceeds 1,100 students. This growth has highlighted the need for additional infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand for tertiary education. The government’s focus on expanding the campus aims to meet this demand while fostering regional integration through education.
“This expansion is timely as we anticipate even greater numbers of local and regional citizens accessing tertiary education here in Antigua and Barbuda,” Browne said. He also noted that the dormitories will play a critical role in attracting students from across the Caribbean and beyond.
The expansion of the UWI Five Islands Campus is part of the government’s broader strategy to prioritize education as a pillar of national development. The project aligns with the Medium-Term Development Strategy, which emphasizes the importance of education in driving productivity and economic growth.
Future phases of the campus expansion will include upgrades to existing buildings, the construction of an administrative complex, a sports complex, and additional facilities to support research and innovation. These investments will further enhance the campus’s ability to serve as a center of excellence for higher education.
The project represents a collaborative effort between Antigua and Barbuda and the Saudi Fund for Development, reflecting the government’s ability to forge international partnerships for national and regional benefit.
Prime Minister Browne also highlighted the regional significance of the campus, noting that its expansion will strengthen UWI’s ability to provide accessible and affordable education to students across the Caribbean. “The UWI Five Islands Campus is not just a national asset; it is a regional institution that serves the broader Caribbean community,” he said.
The expansion is expected to generate economic activity during the construction phase, creating jobs and supporting local businesses. Once completed, the enhanced campus facilities will contribute to Antigua and Barbuda’s long-term economic and social development by producing a more skilled and educated workforce.
The government has also secured additional funding for investments in secondary and primary school infrastructure through the Caribbean Development Bank, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improving education at all levels.
The UWI Five Islands Campus expansion underscores Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to building a resilient and prosperous nation through education. With its focus on fostering academic excellence and regional collaboration, the campus is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Caribbean.
Prime Minister Browne concluded, “This expansion is an investment in our people and our future. By strengthening education, we are creating opportunities for all citizens and residents to thrive and contribute to the advancement of our nation and region.”
