St. Peter By-Election: General Council Ratifies Wehner as UPP Candidate

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has formally ratified George Wehner as its candidate for the upcoming St. Peter by-election, set for January 14, 2025. The announcement was made following the General Council’s decision, solidifying Wehner’s place in the contest for the vacant seat.

1. George Wehner (UPP):
   Officially ratified by the UPP’s General Council, Wehner brings extensive political experience to the race. As the party’s Mobilization Officer, he has built a reputation for advocating accountability and transparency, which are expected to be focal points of his campaign.
2. Rawdon Turner (ABLP):
   The Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) has expressed its intent to field Senator Rawdon Turner as its candidate. Turner, a seasoned legislator and Deputy President of the Senate, aims to focus on development initiatives for the constituency.
3. Nigel Bascus (Missing Link Voice of the People):
   Bascus has expressed his intention to contest the by-election under the Missing Link Voice of the People banner. A veteran political figure, he plans to prioritize youth advocacy and will soon unveil his manifesto.
4. Owen “Go Green” George (GO Green Party):
   Owen George has declared his candidacy on behalf of the GO Green Party. His campaign will center on environmental sustainability and green development, key tenets of his party’s platform.

Nomination Day, set for December 31, 2024, will confirm the full slate of candidates. While four candidates have so far declared their interest, additional contenders, including potential independents, may enter the race.

The by-election, triggered by the death of former MP Asot Michael, is expected to be a closely contested race as the candidates vie for the opportunity to represent the St. Peter constituency. Voters will head to the polls on January 14, 2025, to decide their next representative.
